5 Compelling Reasons Why External Venues Can Enhance Employee Team Building

5 Compelling Reasons Why External Venues HELP Enhance Employee Team Building

Team building is an essential aspect of fostering a positive work culture and maximizing productivity within any organization. While it might seem normal to conduct these activities within the familiar confines of the workplace, there’s a growing trend towards hosting team building events at external venues. In this article, we’ll delve into five compelling reasons why taking your team building activities off-site can significantly benefit employees and contribute to their professional development and well-being and in turn, your organization.

1. A Change Of Scenery Can Spur Creativity & Engagement

One of the primary advantages of opting for an external venue for team building is the opportunity it provides for a change of scenery. Stepping out of the familiar office environment into a new and stimulating setting can ignite creativity and reinvigorate employees’ enthusiasm for participating in team activities. Whether it’s a tranquil retreat nestled in nature or an urban event space, the novelty of the surroundings can inspire fresh ideas and perspectives, leading to increased engagement and active participation.

2. Reduces Workplace Distractions & Promoting Focus

In today’s digital age, workplace distractions such as emails, phone calls, and impromptu meetings can disrupt even the most well-planned team building activities. By moving these events to an external venue, you create a conducive environment where employees can escape the incessant demands of their daily tasks and fully immerse themselves in the team building experience. Minimizing distractions allows participants to focus wholeheartedly on the activities at hand, fostering deeper connections with their colleagues and maximizing the learning and growth opportunities presented.

3. Levels The Playing Field & Encourages Collaboration

The hierarchical structure often inherent in traditional office settings can sometimes hinder open communication and collaboration among team members. Hosting team building activities at an external venue helps level the playing field by removing the physical and psychological barriers associated with the workplace hierarchy. In this more relaxed environment, employees are more inclined to interact with one another on an equal footing, fostering a sense of camaraderie and strengthening interpersonal relationships. This, in turn, paves the way for enhanced collaboration and teamwork back in the office.

4. Fosters Personal Connections and Builds Trust

External venues offer a neutral ground where employees can connect with one another on a more personal level, away from the pressures and constraints of their professional roles. Whether it’s sharing a laugh over a team challenge or offering support during a group activity, these shared experiences help build trust and rapport among team members. Stronger personal connections translate into a more cohesive and resilient team dynamic, where individuals feel valued and supported both personally and professionally.

5. Tailored Environments Can Help Further Facilitate Learning & Growth

External venues often boast specialized facilities and resources specifically designed for team building activities, ranging from challenge courses and outdoor spaces to state-of-the-art meeting rooms and conference facilities. These purpose-built environments provide the ideal backdrop for experiential learning and skill development, allowing employees to step outside their comfort zones and explore new avenues of personal and professional growth. Whether it’s honing leadership skills, improving communication techniques, or fostering creative problem-solving, external venues offer the perfect setting for meaningful learning experiences that resonate long after the event concludes.

In conclusion, hosting team building activities at external venues offers a myriad of benefits for employees, ranging from heightened creativity and engagement to improved collaboration and trust. By stepping outside the confines of the workplace, organizations can create an environment conducive to personal and professional growth, where employees feel empowered to connect, learn, and thrive together as a cohesive team. So, the next time you’re planning a team building event, consider the transformative potential of taking it off-site and embracing the boundless opportunities that external venues have to offer.

The First 3 Things To Consider When Planning Your Overseas Corporate Retreat Or Team Building Retreat

The First 3 Things To Consider When Planning Your Overseas Corporate Retreat Or Team Building Retreat

Once only something Fortune 500 companies or tech giants offer to their employees, corporate retreats are now a growing trend across businesses all over the world from traditional companies to even small businesses.

Before you start worrying about the high costs STOP. With more hotels of varying budgets, cheap airfares and many nearby locations from Singapore,  retreats no longer have to be costly, luxurious, complicated or exquisite.

If you are considering an overseas corporate retreat or a team-building retreat for your team, before you get started planning or searching for hotels or destinations (I know that’s what we would do too), we urge you to read on below as we share the 3 core factors to consider when planning your upcoming retreat.

  1. Goals & Objectives
  2. Knowing Your Team
  3. Budget

Goals & Objectives
The first part of planning any overseas retreat is first asking yourself why you or your organisation are considering such an event. Here are some objectives to get you going.

1) To help staff recharge & restart after a long year.
2) To thank staff for their amazing contributions in the past year.
3) To build stronger bonds across the team away from the traditional work environment
4) Brainstorm new ideas to transform the business

Knowing these objectives and how far up they are on your priority list will allow you to make better decisions along the way. For example, if the main objective of the event is to thank staff for the great year, having tons of meetings, brainstorming sessions & workshops might send the wrong message.

Your Team & Demographics
We always believe no two companies are the same and so what might have worked at your previous organisation might not necessarily work here. Here are a few areas to consider.

  1. Management Team Or Entire Company?
  2. Age Group Of Participants
  3. Company Culture
  4. Interests
  5. Expectations

As you go through the process of planning your retreat or if you hit a roadblock along the way, always go back to the basics to help you make the right choices. Remember, you could organise the fanciest event or jam pack 101 activities in a day but if the activities planned are not suited to the group or the group is exhausted from running from place to place, then the corporate retreat might lose its impact.  In case you feel you can’t do this on your own, consider roping a few colleagues in to form a committee to provide different opinions or do a simple survey to gather information. If you need a template to start with, reach out to us and we’ll be happy to share with you ours. Don’t worry, no obligations or charges at all.

Budget
Budget, it’s always one of the more sensitive topics but it’s also very important. Having a set budget in place will help you manage costs and similar to the other two factors above, help guide decisions along the way.

If you don’t have a specific budget to start with, here are a few areas to consider.

  1. Destination – Accommodation & Meeting Facilities
  2. Meals
  3. Transport – Transport to get to destination and local transport on site.
  4. Event Management & Activities – Optional
  5. Misc – Door Gifts, Prizes or an allowance?

By pulling together estimated costs, you’ll have a better idea how much it’ll cost for different destinations and allow you to narrow down your choices.

If you feel overwhelmed at this point & prefer to work with a corporate retreat, events organiser & team building provider all in one, instead of individual vendors check out our overseas retreats page here.

From a 5D4N retreat in Krabi brainstorming & even volunteering at an orphanage to a 2D1N Malacca visit including a customised Amazing Race or Treasure Hunt to explore its rich culture, we’ve done it all.
